The Commissioner of Education is elected statewide to a four-year term. There is no limit to the number of terms that can be served. The only requirements to run for the office are that the candidate be a U.S. citizen, a registered voter, at least 30 years of age, and a resident of the state for the preceding seven years.
The Commissioner is executive director of the Department of Education. The Department consists of five divisions: Public Schools, Vocational Education, Community Colleges, Universities, and Blind Services.
HISTORY: The office of Superintendent of Public Instruction was created by the 1868 Constitution. The Superintendent was appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate. The 1885 Constitution changed the office to election by the people. The 1968 Constitution changed the name of the office to Commissioner of Education and continued election by the people.
